I believe that the myth has been perpetuated by noobs that don't know better and are parroting marketers with an agenda. With that said, I do think it is something that can hurt you if the article is NOT your own. For example, a PLR article that thousands of people have decided to use without taking the time to rewrite and change into their own unique article. Nothing is more aggravating to me (when I'm searching for information) than coming across the exact same article on 10 different blogs, or websites, all claiming authorship. Will I bother to read anything else on their blog? NO! Will I sign up to their RSS feed or email list? NO! Will I bother to ever visit their blog or website again? A HUGE NO! So , I guess my point is - even if you don't get penalized by the search engines for duplicate content, you are shooting yourself in the foot by publishing the same crap on your blog or website without taking the time to rewrite the content.
